Analysis of an existing promotions package

I am going to conduct an analysis of an existing promotions package, the film that I have decided to look at is 'Bad Teacher' I have decided to do this film because It is a fairly recent film and a major blockbuster so I would like to see if they have used this to their advantage in order to create an effective promotion for the film.

The trailer

I am mainly going to look at the website and the poster as these are the promotions that I am creating myself and I would like some information about what is the best way to create them. I would like to see the good and bad points about each of the products and I would also like to compare them to see if there is fluency and consistency throughout the promotional package.

The website
http://www.areyouabadteacher.com/site/

Good points
  • The website shows a quote and the tag line form the film which links the website into the other products
  • The background is set out like a chalkboard and all of the text is written 'in chalk' this fits in with the idea of school so links in with the storyline of the film
  • The apple on the table fits in with the school theme but also acts as navigation which make the web page more fun and fits in better with the target audience
  • The main image is of the main character, as she is asleep and slouched in a chair it shows that she may be a bit of a party-goer and she doesn't care about her job also with the high heel it shows that she doesn't stick to the rules; all of these link to the idea that the film is a comedy.
  • There is a game on the website; this fits in with the target audience (http://www.areyouabadteacher.com/site/dodgeball/)
Bad points
  • I think that the tag line is too small as this is one of the main parts that link all of the products together so it should be eye-catching and easily noticeable and I think it is too small to do that.
  • The page is too big so a scroll bar has had to be added, A downside it that some of the information at the bottom is cut off such as the institutional information and the Facebook and Twitter links. I think these are really important part of advertising the website and the actual film so they shouldn't be cut off.
The posters
There are 2 posters that come with the film, However this the the most widely used poster, It is part of the main promotional package and is one of the main products that is marketing the film.
Good points
  • The tag line of the film is indicted in the centre of the table, This tag line helps to bring all of the product together. and helps to create fluency between the products.
  • The poster states that the film is coming out 'this summer' however doesn't specify a specific date; this means that people interested in the film will research this themselves and this may mean that they will go on the website, so the poster is not only promoting the film but also the other products in the package.
  • The image on the poster is the exact same image from off of the website, this helps to create fluency and consistency between the two products.
Bad points
  • I think that 'she doesn't give a F' should be bigger or more visible as it is the tag line and this should be recognisable for the user between all of the different products and is something that could bring all of the products together.
  • I think that the poster looks squished in, and parts are even cut off, I think that everything should fit in the poster in order to make the images used complete rather than it look as though it has been cut down to size.
Comparison between the products.
  • The main image has been kept the same - this make the products link together and also makes the image memorable for the audience
  • The tag line appears on both of the products
  • Even the smaller details such as the posit note on the apple have been kept the same
  • The title font and the other fonts have been kept the same which helps for the products to link to together and look similar.
Influence on my own products
  • I am going to make sure that I make the tag line clear on both of the products as this is what makes them all link together.
  • I like that the image form the poster continues onto the website as this makes that image memorable.
  • I really like the fact that the poster doesn't give too much information away; this will then result in the audience doing some independent research and will lead them to the other parts of the promotional package.
  • I will make sure that everything on the pages links to the genre and storyline.
