The Locations, Props and Costumes

We have decided to create a list of the locations, props and costumes that we have decided to use as this gives us a clear idea of exactly what we need to get hold of. I am going to also explain why we have chosen each of the locations, props and the costumes so that a clear idea of what we have chosen and why we have chosen it can be created.

Locations;
  1. We will be using (wembley) one of the schools many football pitches in order to film the football match scene, we thought that as this football pitch is so close it is easy to get the equipment over there and we can use school children that we don't necessarily know as they will be at school anyway.
  2. Jonny Brown's bedroom - We will be using this location in order to film the starting and the end scenes. the setting is a boys bedroom, so this location will work well and along with the correct props and decoration the bedroom can be made to look as though the character has gone out of control.
  3. The Castle Tavern - we have been able to successfully gain access to a real pub, this means that the scene will be more believable and it means we don't have to find props as they will already have table and chairs.
Props;

1st scene - bedroom
  • We will need empty beer cans and general mess such as dirty clothing and food packaging in order to make it look like a boys rooms and as though the young guy has lost all hope.
  • We need a shelf for the guy to look along, a trophy and a picture of his parents will be on the shelf
2nd scene - football match
  • We need a football to be in the shot so it looks like a football game has just finished
  • We need a football trophy for the team to celebrate with
3rd scene - car crash
  • We need newspaper articles to show the parents that have been killed.
  • We need family photos for the young guy to remember.
4th scene - ending
  • We need 'drugs'; we are going to use harmless paracetamol for this scene so that it looks as though the character had dangerous drugs to overdose with, without the need to break the law.
Costumes;

Footballers - They will need to wear matching clothing in order to look like a realistic team. We will use a basic plain white t-shirt and black shorts and socks as these are widely available and will create the effect of a football team.

The parents - We may also use existing photos of my parents such as wedding photos for the articles so a costume may not be needed if we do decide at the last minute to take new photos we will have them wearing simple clothing such as a t-shirt and jeans as this is what is worn by that age group and will make them look comfortable for the 'family portraits'.

Bar owner - He will wear his usual work uniform which is black trousers/jeans and the companies t-shirt this way he ties in with the location
Young Guy - he will be wearing ripped jeans and a dirty t-shirt in order to show the decline he has had and to show the mess he is in. It will also help fit in with the idea of him being in his 20's as this particular age group stereotypically wear casual clothing.

Actors list

The actors we have chosen are;

The Footballers: We will be using the following people to create a fake football match that 'Jonny Brown' wins for his team (the first good memory)
  •  5-10 Richmond School students (year 7/8)
The crash victims (parents):
  • 'The Terrys'
We will be using Emma's parents in order to take fake family photos and crash photos in so that fake newspaper articles can be made for the young 20 year old to look back at.

Bar owner :
  • The owner of the Castle tavern (pub)
The main role of the young guy: (early 20's)
  • Jonny Brown
As we have no links to anyone in their early 20's we have decided to use a 17 year old and rely on the costume to make them look older than they actually are.

Test shots

We have completed some recce shots of the locations to see if they work well  for the trailer.

Location 1 - Boys bedroom

This is the first location and the most used location in the trailer. we needed a boys bedroom for the actor to use as his own, even though we could add props such as beer cans and litter, this isn't a very suitable location as their is no shelf for the trophy and picture. We also thought that the actor may be more comfortable in his own bedroom and the scene will be more believable.

Location 2 - football pitch

This was our original idea for the location of the football match as it already has goals and football lines, however it doesn't look like a football pitch as such and we wouldn't have much access to it as it is widely used.

This is the new location for the football match, we have decided on this as it is close to school so the transport of the equipment would be easy to manage. We could also easily arrange for the actors to get there and we can put up some goals for the shot.

We have however decided on the sport hall at Richmond School as our back-up location just in case the weather isn't on our side.

Location 3 - Pub

We originally thought that we wouldn't be able to gain access to a real pub as we are under-age and they are always relatively busy. This is why we thought about the Georgian for our pub location as they are supportive to the arts. however after closer inspection it was impossible to cut out the signs from the shot so it was too clear that it was a theatre and not a pub.

We thought that we would try a few pubs just in-case and after a few attempts we found a small pub in the centre of town. The Castle Tavern was very willing to have us film in their pub and were even willing to give us a member of staff to act as our barman. This will be the definite location for our pub scene.

Test sounds

We have found some sound files that we think we would like to recreate for the film however we decided to test them to see if they were the type of sound that we were looking for.

Sirens
http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/games/serverdownload/hlds/cstrike/sound/box_posfx.wav

I decided to research into the sounds of sirens as I wanted to find out if we could make the sounds ourselves, we need siren noises for one of the scenes and I wanted to see how complex the sounds were, I think that a basic siren noise could be created using garage band so this is how we will create it.
Car crash
http://www.ndrr.com/rmr_faq/Sounds/car_crash.wav

A car crash noise would be quite hard to make as we need to sounds of brakes and also of the crash however using simple objects such as toys and glass bottles means we can create a noise we could record in order to create the resemblance of a car crash.

Heartbeat
 http://www.dundee.ac.uk/medther/Cardiology/audio/ps.wav

I think that we would be able to create the sound of a heartbeat by using drum noises. as the quality of the heartbeat noise in this example is quite poor, I think that using drums sounds will be better as a solid loud noise can be made in order for the base of our soundtrack.

Flatline
http://www.shadowsbastion.com/library/media/audio/wavs/FLATLINE.WAV

To create a successful flat line a long monotone 'beep' needs to be recorded, this can be found from tones on mobile phones to fire alarms so this can be easily recorded.

Cheering
http://www.steelersinhoboken.com/Downloads/Wavs/Crowd%20Cheering.wav

The cheering in this example wasn't the type of cheering that we needed, the cheering we need is from the celebration when the child scores the goal, I think that it would be best recording the sound itself on audacity or even alongside the action and the sound level can be adjusted in order to make the sound more prominent.

Pill bottle
http://www.soundjay.com/misc/pill-bottle-2.wav

This can be easily recorded using any sort of medicine bottles or capsule packaging found in all households so this can just be recorded and made louder and added to the action in order to create an effective sound.

Heavy breathing
http://noproblo.dayjo.org/GE/GE_Breathe.wav
This can also be recorded on a programme such as audacity and added to the trailer in order to make the sound louder and more prominent.

Songs we could have used

Here is an ipod containing some songs that we could have used in the trailer if we weren't making our own sounds.

Final design of the logo / font of the title

We have now finished creating the logo and have also decided on the final font of the title they are;

Logo design
We have decided on design 5 as we think that it will be the most effective and we really like the fact that we can animate it to make it more interactive. whilst still having a still image at the end that we can put on our other products from the package; this will help to create continuity and consistency throughout our production package. Also after doing the market research we found that this was the clear favourite design.

This is the animation

We have decided to use font '5' as the font for our title because; it fits in with the genre and also looks as though it has been hand drawn in a moment of insecurity or anger, this is exactly what is happening with the main character so fits in with that as-well. We also conducted some research and asked our audience which one they preferred and it was this design

The importance of costume

Research - BBFC guidelines

We have decided to conduct some research into the BBFC guidelines because film certification is a requirement by law for every film that in made. Film certification can have a positive impact on the film as by having a certification that is linked to your target audience means the target audience are able to go and watch the film; however this can also have the opposite effect, by having a certification that is too high for you target audience to see means that they can't watch the film, which could result in disaster as the film won't be watched and won't make any turnover, For example 'This is England's' director 'Shane Meadows' wanted the film to be  marketed at young teens in order to educate them about what life used to be like in the 70's/80's, However after the film was given an 18 by the BBFC it had a very negative effect on the film as its audience weren't old enough to watch the film.

This is one of the main reasons that we decided to conduct this research ion order to see where abouts our film trailer would be classified so that we could get an idea of who our target audience would be.

We have conducted some research into the classification of films entering the UK cinemas and DVD rentals. We used the British Board OF Film Classification (BBFC). We used their website to find out about the classification of films to find out the age that our film could be screened to.

12 certificate

We firstly  looked at the 12 and 12A guidelines. we noticed that 12A means you need to be accompanied by an adult to see the film. we noticed that drugs could be shown however adults may find this unsuitable, We thought that our trailer would maybe be controversial so We thought that a higher certificate may be more acceptable.

15 certificate

Next we looked at the 15 certificate. This said that drug use could be shown however it must not glorify drug taking or show it in a positive way. Our Trailer wouldn't be doing this so it would fit in with this certificate; however I am going to check the 18 certificate anyway to see if that may be more suitable.

The 18 certificate states that
drug use and even glorified  The 18 certificate states that drug use and even glorified drug use, this means that we can show any sort of drug use, However our drug scene won't actually show or glorify drug taking so I think that having an 18 certificate would be too high for our trailer.

I think that giving our film a 15 certificate would be the most suitable as this way we won't be showing 12 year old something their parents may find inappropriate, and also we won't have a Certificate that is too high for our target market to go and see.

Types of camera movement

I have also conducted some research into camera movement as I have very little knowledge of what camera movements there are and how to create them. I am going to try and re-create some of these shots myself so that I can get used to how to film them.

1) Pans -
This is a movement where the camera scans the scene horizontally. This is mainly used in order to follow a character across the scene.

2) Tilts -
This is a movement where the camera scans the scene vertically. (similar to a pan)

3) Dolly shots -
This is where the camera is placed on a moving trolley, they are used in order to follow the character around a larger scene. Usually a track in built into the scene for the 'dolly' to wheel round on. This portrays a good idea of movement and can be used to show a characters journey.

4) Hand held shots -
This is where the camera is mounted on the character being used. This gives the audience insight into what the character does. I can be stabilised by a harness on the chest or a head camera (Being N-Dubz is a prime example). However a hand held can just be carried in order to create a jerky and ragged effect that can make the audience feel disorientated and confused. hand held shots bring the audience into the scene and can create a type of gritty realism.

5) Cranes -
This is basically a dolly shot but in the air, the camera can move in all directions (up, down, left and right) and can create the idea of swooping (bird) or can follow a prop for example a feather into the air as it flies.

6) Zoom lenses -
A zoom is used in order to get further into or further away from the action, however if a smash zoom (fast zoom) is used the image can become blurred and distorted this can be an effect within itself however to create the idea of mystery or suspicion a slow zoom can be used.

7) Aerial shots -
This is where a helicopter is used to film, it creates an establishing shot and sets the scene in a very exciting way also the helicopter can move in every direction which gives the camera freedom of movement; however sound can be very annoying and no real detail can be picked up.

Types of camera angles

I have decided to conduct some research into the types of camera angles that there are, I have done this because I would like the background knowledge that I would need in order to make the best decisions of what shots to use.

1) Birds eye view -
This is where the shot is taken from overhead or directly above. This gives the audience a sort of god-like feeling as they look down on the action. People can be made to look ant-like and significant, this is a useful shot when trying to create the idea of insecurities or overpowerment. However this shot can also be combined with a point of view to create a super-hero or someone flying in a helicopter for example.

2) High angle -
This is a step down from a birds eye view shot, the camera is lifted over the action, a high angle makes the object or character filmed seem less significant or overpowered, I also think that this shot could be used along with a 'zoom out' in order to show the character become and blending in with the scene which can make them look over powered.

3) Eye level -
this is more of a neutral shot, the camera seems to have taken human form and is watching over the scene, this brings focus to the heads and in particular the eye-level of the characters. To create this type of shot the camera is generally placed about 5 or 6 feet from the ground. (depending on the height of the character)

4) Low angle -
low angles give a sense of confusion to the audience. as they will feel powerless with in the scene, as the background is usually a ceiling or the sky the viewer will feel slightly disorientated as they have little view of the scene they are in. The audience will feel a sense of fear and insecurity when this shot is used, as they will feel psychologically dominated.

5) Oblique/canted angle -
This is where the camera is tilted to give the feeling of instability and in balance. if this camera shot is used along with a point of view shot and a hand held camera it can create the feeling of confusion and disorientation.

Types of Framing/shot length

I have decided to complete some test shots so that I can see what sorts of shots we can use and how effective they would be. I have taken the images myself so that I can get used to the shot length myself.

1) Extreme close up- This generally magnifies what the human eye usually can't see, the shot shows extreme details of a character or object for example. no background detail is visible and for example if the close up is of the face the extreme close up would be of the eye or mouth, this shot is mainly used to go into the characters thoughts and feelings and emotions are generally shown.

2) Close up- Little or a blurred background is used so that full focus is on the face or a specific part of the mise-en-scene. This type of shot is used in order to show the detail of an object or the particular emotion of the character. This type of shot is a very intimate shot and will either make the audience feel extremely comfortable or extremely uncomfortable depending on the context.

3) Mid shot - These are shots taken from the waist up, this shot gives details of the character however emotion and really clear details are hard to show using this shot.

4) Long Shot - a long shot is a shot that shows the full body of a character or the complete prop for example. these are used in order to give the audience a basic idea about the character but no detail is shown, this can be used in order to create the effect of mystery.

5) Extreme long shot - This is generally used in order to set the scene. It is usually used to show the outdoors for example buildings or landscape. Very little detail is shown in these types of shots as they are used in order to give a general insight into the location and not give away to much information.

6) Point of view - A point of view shot is where the camera shows what the character can see. this gives the audience the feeling that they are part of the character and gives them insight abut what they do for example.
7) Two shot -  These are very self explanatory as they are a shot containing 2 people. these are mainly combined along with long shots in order to show two people in a setting. however they can also be combined along with mid shots in order to express the idea of friendship for example. You can have many people in the shot but the shot becomes a 3 shot or 4 shot, but the more people means the further away the image is taken from.

8) Over the shoulder shot - these are shots taken in scene that contain dialogue. They are a shot taken from one characters shoulder looking onto another character, these are combined with mid shots mainly in order to show the details needed such as emotion and the dialogue.

Key roles

I have decided to conduct some research into the different roles in the film industry so that we can assign these roles to each of the members in our team.

Distributor
I have decided to conduct some research into the role of the distributor as I would like to find out how important their role is in the film industry.

The role of the distributor is to promote the film on release, In order to do this the distribution team usually creates a distribution plan; This contains information on The budgeting, the marketing and the prints created.

There are factors that the distributor needs to take into account for example ...
  • The competition - If there is competition releasing a similar movie then they need to take this into account as having two similar movies in the market at the same time can result in a lower turnover for both of the companies.
  • The U.S.P - the unique selling point of the film needs to be taken into account as this can be a major factor to promote the film
  • The actors - having main stream or blockbuster actor/actresses can also help to promote the film as their fans will want to see them in their newest role. Also having big stars in the film means that any party or event they go to may help to promote the film
  • Awards - having the film win awards means that more people will be willing to watch the film and also will get them exited about being able to see a piece of work that has won awards.
  • The certification of the film - this is really important because it decides the size and age of the market that the film can get to.
The marketing plan
  • to raise awareness of the film
  • the creation of trailers, posters and websites
  • Promotional partners ships (MacDonald's)
  • word-of-mouth (can have a negative effect)
Producer
A film producer role is to firstly to obtain the rights to create the screenplay. The producer oversees the process of creating the film, through co-ordinating and supervising the major aspects of the film. Their role also includes fund raising for the film and also hiring important staff such as the line producer and the casting director.

From the first draft script, through all stages of production, to the final dub, success or failure rests largely in the hands of the producer. Experience in this field does not come overnight. Rather it is born out of long years of creative and technical know-how, and above all a love for the job and all that goes with it, together with the ability to choose the right talent with which to surround himself. - Julien Wintle (1913–1980) (producer and editor)

The producer also is in charge of the roles of executive producer and the line producer

The executive producer is not involved in the day-to-day production but is in charge of representing the financial investor of the film; this could be the distributor or a film studio. The executive producer can be also be the author of the book that the film is based on or even an actor who has convinced the studio to run the filming process.

Co-producers and Associate producers are not as involved as the executive producer, their role is to support the executive producer and producer where needed.

A line producer's has a very hands on role they are involved in the day-to-day financial and production problems, they are also involved in supporting the director with their decisions.

Casting director
I thought that I would do some research on who actually casts a film as I always thought that it was mainly the director's job to do so, but from my findings its not.
The casting director is the main person who casts a film, from choosing the main role down to extras used in the background. They are given a rough image that the director imagines to play the part, for example he may give them the gender and the persons particular age/hair colour/skin colour etc, and the casting director has to find someone who fits the bill.
When casting an actor an audition process is generally taken out and the casting director is given the final word about who plays the part. Famous casting directors include Kerry Barden who casted films like American Pyscho and Se7en and Sheila Jaffe who casted Rambo and The Italian Job. This illustrates that they each have a particular genre that they mainly specialise in to make them appeal to production companies looking for casting directors.

Film director
The job of a film director is one of the most important roles when creating a film. Their job involves many creative aspects whilst organising a production team. They are the main person needed to make a film as they control everything. They include;
-Bringing the author/ screen writer's vision to life
-Overseeing the work of the film producer
-They cut the script into short sequences, and decide on the camera angles that will work well with certain events
-They normally conduct a rehearsal so that they know how the scene will look and if any small changes need to be made e.g. the way an actor speaks a line
-Once the film is finished they work closely with the editor to ensure that certain emotions are portrayed well through editing, the composition of shots are correct and that the sound matches on screen actions.

Examples:
Steven Spielberg- War Horse, Shindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, Transformers, War of the Worlds, Jurassic Park, ET, Indiana Jones etc.
Tim Burton-Edward Scissor Hands, Alice in Wonderland, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Corpse Bride
Guy Ritchie- Rock'n'Rolla, Sherlock Holmes, Suspect

Tutorials

After conducting the research into the hardware and software I would be using I decided to conduct some research into the programmes; Final cut pro and Garageband. I have decided to do this as I would like to become as familiar as I possibly can with the programmes so that when it comes to using them I will be quite confident and happy to do so.

Final Cut Pro
Final Cut Pro is the programme that we have installed on the Macs, I have never used this programme before so I need to look at some tutorials of how to use the basic features and where all of these features are located.

Garage band
Garage band is another programme that is installed on the Macs. as with final cut pro I have never used Garage band before so I need to familiarise myself with the functions and features on this programme so that when I come to use the programme for the project I can do so with ease but also precision.

After watching all of these video I am now confident that I know the basics of the software and that I can successful create the effects that I wished to create.

Hardware and software

I have decided to research into the hardware and software that I will be using so that I can see what sorts of equipment and programmes that I need to become familiar with

Hardware/ Equipment

The Macs - I will be using the macs in order to edit the footage that I have taken. I have never used the macs before So I will need to do some tutorials and some research into how the operate and how to use the programmes on the desktop.

The Film camera (and equipment) - I will be using a professional Sony video camera in order to catch the footage. Along with the camera I will need the separate pieces of equipment such as the boom pole and microphone, The tripod and a tape for the film. I have little knowledge of these pieces of equipment however I think that after conducting some test shots the equipment will get easier to set up and operate.

Camera - I am going to use a samsung camera to take the photos that I need for the web page and Poster. I have quite a lot of knowledge and experience with the still cameras and understand terms such as the rule of thirds and framing. I think that I will be able to use this knowledge to my advantage in order to create a professional looking poster.

Software

Final cut pro - Final Cut PRO is a piece of software that is installed on the macs that you use to edit footage. I have never used Final Cut Pro so I will need to attempt some tutorials and watch some videos in order to learn how to use this particular piece of software.

Garage band - Garage band is another Programme that is installed on the Macs. This programme is a sound programme that you can create separate sounds or soundtracks on; that you can then add to the footage. I have never used this programme either so tutorials and research will be needed.

Photoshop - I am fairly familiar and confident with the programme Photoshop, Photoshop is a programme where you can manipulate and layer images in order to create background, posters and other forms of graphics. I don't need to research this programme as I am reasonable at using it anyway. However if I come across a certain feature that I am unsure about I will conduct the research as this arises.

Dreamweaver - I will be using Dreamweaver in order to create the website for the film I am creating. I have used Dreamweaver before and am currently using it for another course I am taking. I already know the basics of the programme and am currently learning the more advanced techniques this means that individual tutorials won't be needed.

Bourne identity analysis

We have conducted an analysis into the trailer of Bourne Identity because we feel that this
fits into the genre of our trailer and we also feel that more research will only help us to create the best trailer that we can.

Abduction - trailer

I have decided to construct an analysis into the trailer for Abduction. I feel that this fits in well with our storyline and genre. It also is a recent film so we will be able to look out for good features so that it will help us create the best trailer that we can.

Trailer

Trailer analysis - Drama

I am now going to analyse a trailer in the genre of 'drama', I have decided to do this as I am new to the idea of Psychological dramas and I need to find out what is included in them and the emotions/feelings that we need to create on our audience.

Trailer- The social network

I chose the social network as it is a drama that involves the idea of a great life turning into a bad one and drug/alcohol content. this means that it links in with our trailer and may give us an idea of how to handle the ideas of drugs and also how to entice the audience. The social network is also a very modern film as it relates to 'Facbook' which is a very current issue.

Camera angles
  • Extreme close-ups are used at the start these are used in order to show the audience detail about the issue that is being covered.. This help to create tension as only minute details are shown so it leaves the audience guessing about what the film is going to be about.
  • Extreme close-ups are also used in order to show the details about what the mouse is clicking on, you can't see the full page but you can see the details that give off clues about what the page is showing.
  • A long shot is used rather than an establishing shot, This shot is used to show the scene and gives the audience an idea of where the trailer is taking place.
  • A mid shot is used to show the amount of people involved and to give the idea of a party scene whilst showing the smaller details of bottles and glasses.
  • An over the shoulder shot is used to show dialogue between the characters, this makes it clear to the audience that not only the character speaking is involved in the scene.
Editing
  • A very slow pixel-like fade is used in order to bring the first image on the screen, this fade is very effective as it firstly creates tension whilst the pixelated effect creates the ides of a computer
  • A series of fast paced cuts are used in order to show the various parts of the web page. This alongside the extreme lose ups create an overall picture of the web page even though only minute details are shown.
  • Another slow pixelated fade is used to go form the detail of his nose and zoomed out into the picture of his face, again this gives the idea of a computer screen and also it makes the audience curious about what the picture is going to turn out as.
  • A series of a mixture of Jump cuts and Fades are used in order to show all of the scenes. Fast paced jump cuts are used when there are problems
Sound
  • There is a main soundtrack at the start; it is a piano alongside some choir singing, It has a very relaxed sound to it however it also creates a very tense effect as I feel something is going to happen
  • The soundtrack is quietened when dialogue is on-screen this helps to keep the effect that the soundtrack is creating whilst drawing the audiences attention to the dialogue.
  • The soundtrack speeds up and becomes louder when things start to get heated up, this goes well with the shouting and stops the audience being relaxed and makes them feel engaged in the film.
Mise-en-scene
The mise-en-scene used needs to be linked to the idea of technology and the 21st century as this is what the film is based around
  • The costumes represent the idea of wealth and the party scene, as the men are wearing tuxedos and the women are wearing dresses. however when things start to go wrong it switches to PJ's and a dressing gown, this show the decent of his life and clearly highlights how his life has changed for the worst.
  • The main prop used is the computer, as this is essentially what the trailer is centred around, it clarifies to the audience which era the film is from and highlights that this film centres around technology.
  • Another prop that stands out for me is the alcohol as this shows the stereotypical view of teenagers at college/university. It shows the audience how people portray college students as 'wild' and 'drunk'
  • The lighting used is mainly artificial to show that most of the filming is indoors.
  • One type of lighting that stands out to me is the torch lighting used when the students are caught at a party. Even though the room is slightly lit by lamps the torch really stands out an almost symbolises the idea of authority.
What I have learnt
  • I have learnt that a soundtrack can create just as must tension and effect compared to sound effects.
  • By lowering and adjusting the sound level certain parts pf the trailer can be made more dramatic and This helps them to stand out.
  • By having several extreme close-ups that are split up by fast paced cuts means that an overall picture of the main object can be made, this gives the audience an individual idea of the overall product depending on how they interpret each of the shots.
  • By having opposite things that are meant to fit together creates a great effect, in this case a wealthy man is walking around in a hooded top and slouchy jeans which brings across the point that money doesn't bring everything.
  • By using slow paced fades to bring the overall image into focus is a very effective technique ; as it leave the audience guessing about what the image is going to show.

'Memento' analysis

I am now going to analyse the trailer of 'Memento' I have decided to conduct this analysis as momentum is a psychological drama and has a storyline that links to ours.

The trailer

A man, suffering from short-term memory loss, uses notes and tattoos to hunt for the man he thinks killed his wife. This links to our our storyline in the fact that his tattoos and notes trigger his memories and with ours there are certain objects that trigger the memories.

This particular shot is a shot that we would like to use in our trailer. the use of the dark lighting creates a shadow on his face which gives the charcater a sense of mystery. also the use of a spotlight that hits his eye is also a really good effect. this is because it draws attention straight to the eye and it almost looks as though we are looking into his memories. This is the effect that we are trying to create so using this as our research source would be a good idea. if we can create this effect at this sort of standard then it will set the film off well.

There is also one main narration used on the trailer this is because he is telling people what has happened and about his condition whilst all of the memories are coming to life onscreen. This could be a good idea to use in our film if the heartbeat sound isn't effective.

There are also moments when you feel as a viewer that you are listening in on his thoughts. In one particular scene you hear him say 'what have I done' as he drags away a body. This is quite effective as it is very phsycological and almost chilling to hear someones thoughts. It could be quite a good technique to have our actor talk over his memories as this could make it almost uncomfortable for the viewer. which is sort of the type of reaction that we want to create.

The camera angles used are always based around the main character, as he talks he almost looks scared and bewildered. His facial expression is captured in all scenes so that the audience can almost feel like him.

Conclusion
We have been unable to find an existing film with a storyline that is close to ours however 'Momento' has similar themes and camera angles to our movie and we are going to use this small analysis to help us with our filming and to help make a trailer more of a success.

Genre - choice

We are planning to have the trailer as a psychological drama/thriller because we feel as though this work quite well within the film industry and have quite a large audience that are interested within this genre. We also feel as though this genre will work well with the planning we have done for the trailer.

We are however going to conduct some research into a mixture of psychological thrillers and psychological dramas to see which will fit best into the storyline that we have created.

The clues for the Genre/storyline

I have decided to watch a trailer that I have never seen before and have tried to guess what the film is going to be about. I wanted to do this because I thought I might be able to pick out ways that we could use to get our message across about what our film is going to be about.

Trailer - As if I'm not there

Film Trailers by Filmtrailer.com
I made notes about what I had seen in the film that gave clues about What the film could possibly be about. these clues were
  • The tattoo on the wrist - prisoner?
  • locked in a room at the end
  • young women - older men
  • blank / innocent facial expressions
  • fearful
  • mountain ranges
  • tatty clothing
  • travelling
  • sad/tense music
  • main women with different men
  • men with guns
  • men and women are separate
These clues all lead to my overall idea of what the film was about this was...

Women taken hostage by the soldiers and kept in prisons (camps). the older women are used for work and the younger women are used for sex. The main character has been separated from her younger sister in order to have sex with older men. At the end the women have been freed from the camps.

Actual storyline
A harsh dose of cinematic realism about a harsh time-the Bosnian War of the 1990s-Juanita Wilson's drama is taken from true stories revealed during the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague. Samira is a modern schoolteacher in Sarajevo who takes a job in a small country village just as the war is beginning to ramp up. When Serbian soldiers overrun the village, shoot the men and keep the women as labourers (the older ones) and sex objects (the younger ones), Samira is subjected to the basest form of treatment imaginable.

Conclusion
I noticed that my prediction was fairly similar to the actual plot, I was able to figure out the storyline from the clues that the mise-en-scene and camera angles had left. This made me realise that we needed to have certain clues in our trailer so that we can give away enough information to entice people to come and see the film but not give away too much information so the plot is ruined.

Editing

Editing is an important part of trailers, as they can have a positive or negative effect on how the film is adopted by the audience, Certain types of editing link in with certain genres better than others and the editing speed links in with the on-screen action.

Types of editing are..
  • Fades - used both fast and slow paced, They are used in order to show the passing of time or to show institutional information
  • Jump cuts- they are used in order to show another setting at the same time, sometimes the previous and new scene are superimposed next to each other to show they are at the same time.
  • Cuts - they are used in order to show a brand new scene with no link to the previous.
  • Bridges - they are used in TV shows such as friends, bridges are where the scenes stop and a part of the setting is shown (the coffee house in 'Friends') the  the next scene it played, This helps to show the passing of time.
  • Wipes are used in order to show several scenes straight after each other, they show that they are linked in some way but may not be from the same time.
  • Fast paced Edits are used to create chaos or to make the action seem more tense or effective. these are mainly seen in action and horror films
  • Slow paced edits are used in order to create a relaxed atmosphere or even a tense moment in the film, These types of edits can be seen in dramas and also thrillers, the slow paced feel creates tension and emotion.

I have also conducted some research on editing. I wanted to see how much an effect that editing has on the mood and vibe of a trailer. I used three totally contrasting trailers in order to do this they were; 'Super', 'Ward no.6' and 'Film Socialisme'.

Trailer 1 - Super

Film Trailers by Filmtrailer.com

I found out that in the comedy/action film the editing was fairly fast paced; this was in order to create the idea of action and chaos. I also noticed that when he was creating the superhero suit cuts and a zoom lens were used in order to show every part of the costume without having to spend to long on that scene, this was a really effective technique as this showed the audience detail without the long wait. I also liked the use of green screens as they gave a comic effect and made the trailer seem like the old superhero films with the 'POW' and 'BOOM' actions. I also liked the use of animation alongside the real footage as this gave a comic effect without the film becoming too child orientated.

Trailer 2 - Ward no.6

The editing used in this particular trailer was a lot slower paced than the previous trailer. This was to make the editing seem relaxed whilst the on-screen action ans soundtrack suggest otherwise. I like the use of the fade and blur at the beginning of the trailer as it seems as though it is bringing life inside the asylum into focus. I also noticed the used of a very slow paced across wipe, this is used to make all of the patients featured seem linked. Right at the end of the trailer a fade is used along with a zoom lens, this is used to show a patient stood in the corridor, with this very slow paced fade and zoom helps to create the feeling of the passing of time.

Trailer 3 - Film Socialisme

Film socialisme had a very unexpected editing that was used, The music was quite slow paced and classical whereas the on-screen action was fast paced and chaotic; in order to create this effect time-lapse film was used along with very rapid cuts. Also instead of using a fade to the information the text was superimposed on top of the screen instead this made it seem even more unstructured and chaotic.

I have found out that ...
  • Having fast paced edits creates chaos and uncertainty
  • Having slow paced edits not only creates tension but can also make comedy moments more noticeable
  • Time-lapse film is a great way to create chaos and to confuse the audience, this in itself is an effective way to entice to audience into finding out more about the film.
  • Using a slow paced wipe is an effective way to show that something in linked
  • By using Jump cuts and fades you can cut out the not important parts of a scene, it also helps to create a jumpy, confused action; as shown in Ward no.6

Sound

I conducted some research into 'Sound' I wanted to find out how important sound is in trailers. I basically watch two totally contrasting trailers that I had never seen before and watched them without sound to guess what sort of sound would be used, I then watched them with sound to see if my predictions were correct.

Trailer 1 -

Film Trailers by Filmtrailer.com

I had decided that I would watch the trailer 3 times; the first time I watched the film in silent in order to get a gist of what the trailer is about and the genre of film that I was watching, the second time I would watch it again in silent in order to pick out ideas of sound that I thought was being used I made notes about the sounds that I expected to hear so that I would be able to compare this with the actual outcome. The final time that I watched the trailer I listened out for the sounds that I predicted but also sounds that I didn't expect so that I could learn about the sounds that link with certain genres or the on-screen action.
I noticed that I had  correctly guessed a lot of the different sounds in the trailer. This is mainly due to the fact that I had correctly guessed the genre of the film, this meant that I could write down the words that I would usually link in with Rom/Com films, I also looked at the on-screen action in order to pick out actions that may produce diagetic sound  or dialogue moments.Rom/com films generally contain diagetic sound such as laughing and having fun which is why I added this to my list. I also noticed that most film trailers contain a soundtrack of some sort, In this case the soundtrack was played throughout the trailer and as the soundtrack was a happy, soft song it fit in with the idea of romance and comedy.

Trailer 2 - Mothers Day

Film Trailers by Filmtrailer.com

I found out that I was quite close to the actual sounds, I noticed at the start that there was a party scene this lead me to the idea that a soundtrack was being used that the characters were dancing to. I noticed a lot of on-screen actions that lead to presumptions of sounds such as 'gunshots' and 'screaming' these assumptions also turned out to be correct. I also thought about other horror trailers that I had seen and thought about the sounds used in them; I thought about the effect of silence to create an eerie moment.

Trailer 3 - Trust
Next I decided to see what sort of effect the sound has to create a feeling or mood, I used the trailer 'Trust' in order to research this

Film Trailers by Filmtrailer.com

The purpose of doing this final task was to see if the on-screen action and the sound actually linked with one another and also to see what sort of effect the sounds has on the actual trailer.

In the first part of the trailer there is a party scene happening which is jolly and everyone seems to be having a good time, However the music doesn't match as the music has a sinister aspect to it as if something is about to go wrong. So the narrative was making us think one thing whilst the soundtrack was making us think another.

I also noticed that silence was also used for an effect in this trailer. This made the scene seem tense and eerie, which added the effect that something was about to go wrong.
I also noticed that there was crying in the film however the sound effect of the crying was dimmed. And the sad/tense music was playing instead. This created a very good effect as the on-screen and sound were both suggesting sadness even though they weren't linked.

Conclusion
This research has shown that we need to think about...
  • How important it is to link the sound with the genre of film
  • How the sound links with our target audience
  • How we can use the sound to create tension
  • How we can use sound to relate to certain emotions
  • How sound can go against the on-screen action with an effective outcome
  • How the setting of the film effects the sounds heard e.g. desert - western music
